Things to do in Leicester: heritage, parks, science and culture

Build a Leicester day out around museums, the National Space Centre, Abbey Park and the Cultural Quarter.

Explore the historic centre

Start with the King Richard III Visitor Centre for the king's life, death and rediscovery, then leave time for the surrounding Old Town. Nearby Leicester Cathedral and the Guildhall make natural additions, but each has its own visitor arrangements. Check opening times, services, events and admission information before settling on a route.

For Roman history, add Jewry Wall. Its bathhouse remains and museum offer a different perspective from the medieval streets. A shorter visit with time to explore one museum is often more satisfying than trying to fit every historic building into a morning.

Make time for science

The National Space Centre is a separate destination from the Old Town, so allow for the journey rather than expecting it to be next door. Its distinctive Rocket Tower houses major space artefacts, including Blue Streak and Thor Able rockets, with exhibition decks exploring rocketry and the Space Race.

Use the attraction's own visitor information to plan tickets and access requirements. If you are organising a family day, decide whether science is the main event and build other stops around it, rather than promising a rushed tour of the whole city.

Take a break in Abbey Park

Abbey Park, north of the city centre, offers riverside walks, formal gardens, a lake and the remains of St Mary's Abbey and Cavendish House. It works well as an outdoor change of pace between indoor attractions, or as the main destination for a quieter outing.

The council lists play facilities, toilets and accessibility information. Some attractions operate seasonally, so check before promising a particular activity to children. Plan for the weather and allow time simply to walk and enjoy the park.

Finish with a performance or film

Curve and Phoenix are useful starting points for theatre, independent cinema and contemporary culture in the Cultural Quarter. Check the programme for the day you are visiting and book directly through the venue's official channels where required.

If your plans include several venues, check their locations and leave a comfortable gap between bookings. Keep meals and travel in mind when choosing a start time. A museum, an outdoor break and one evening event make a practical outline; you can then adapt it to your interests, budget and energy.
